As this book is a collection of previous works, the presentation is objective, which I deem necessary. I would recommend it to anyone looking to read the classics. I used it for a research paper on Anselm's Cur Deus Homo. I am now contemplating buying the rest of this series simply for fulfilling my desire to read all this series contains. The series itself is a marvelous collection of works that every serious reader of Christianity should own. Therefore, if you do not already own them all, purchase this series immediately and set to studying it. It can only help you, your church, and all who come in contact with you or your church.

A very thought provoking book. The writings of Anselm especially moved me as he argued the case for God and how He is alive working in this world. A true treat as you look into the minds of early Christians scholars in the 12th and 13th century.

I was skeptical of this material when I first purchased it, figuring it was merely a selection of raw material taken from various church fathers. What I discovered was a focused and well-commented set of materials designed to provide the reader with a source-based picture into the development of early church ecclesiology. The author selects 4 Latin writers (Tertullian, Cyprian, Ambrose, and Jerome) and provides a brief biography of each. Then chooses a set of source materials that highlight their conception of church government. Prior to each material, the author thoroughly describes the historical occasion which precipitates the source document. In all, the reader is left with a good impression of the ecclesiology of each of these foundational theologians.

This anthology was originally compiled by Eugene Fairweather in the 1950s. It is an excellent compilation of many of the most important primary-source documents from the theologians and philosophers of the middle ages. Anselm's writings are emphasized, with about 150 pages of the anthology devoted to his thought. Some of the others who are also given space (although less than devoted to Anselm) are: Eadmer, Ivo of Chartres, Gratian, Abelard, Hugh of St. Victor, Richard of St. Victor, Peter Lombard, Stephen Langton, Bonaventure, Duns Scotus, and William of Ockham. What about Aquinas? I was initially puzzled at the apparent lack of coverage for this most important figure of the middle ages. Thankfully, I discovered that his writings are collected in Volume XI of the Library of Christian Classics series. Other than this, the collection found in Volume X does a great job of bringing together the most important writings from Western Christendom in the period of 1000-1400 AD.

This anthology, originally compiled in the 1950s by Eugene Fairweather, contains many of the most important primary-source documents from the philosophers and theologians of the middle ages. With considerable knowledge and ingenuity, Lukacher adapts Freud's notion of the primal scene to describe both "the interpretive impasse that arises when a reader has good reason to believe that the meaning of one text is historically dependent on the meaning of another or on a previously unnoticed set of criteria, even though there is no conclusive . . . means of establishing the case . . ." and the interpretive constructions he develops to overcome that impasse. In addition to Freud, Lukacher bases these constuctions on Heidegger, Derrida, and Lacanhis discussions full of the dense jargon fashionable today when dealing with those authors. His interpretations bring together authors such as Hegel, Marx, and Shakespeare in provocative ways but, despite the heavy philosophical and psychoanalytical artillery, not in particularly convincing or central ones. I love car design and would have loved to be a car designer. At this point in my life, I live vicariously through books such as this which can give me insight into the industry. This book is a hardback suitable for display. It provides intelligent historical perspectives into some of the most prolific and well-known automobile designers from the 1920s to almost today. Of real interest to me was enjoying the chronicling of carriage-like derivatives to the eventual post WW2 changes....fenders came in, running boards disappeared, bodies swelled over wheel wells, and then fins started to grow out of the rear.The book touches not only on American designers, such as Harvey Earl, but expands its reach world-wide to catalog designers from Italy, France Germany, Japan and other countries.There are beautiful full-page illustrations of designs and a multitude of historical photographs.The only criticism I have is somewhat of a personal choice. I wish the author had allowed commentary of the various illustrations by designers where able to do so (if they were still living).

This is an outstanding book if your are in the car design industry or if you just like cars! It covers the history of auto design, from the earliest designers right up to the present, by country. All the biggies are here: Pininfarina, Ferrari, etc. I highly recommend this book!

This book may really be a life changer and I cannot recall ever writing or feeling that way in all my 62 years. I got this book after experiencing some seriously sad times with my in-laws and I had been watching them both go downhill for the last few years. Within the last few months they both are gone and it was not pretty. This book explains all the health research and even though I had thought that obesity was taking my mother-in-law down, there was even more, with zero interest in cognitive, and continuous over eating and no exercise. I want to be like my aunt who "kept all her buttons" (words of a 93-year old) to the end and from this book I know I can have a shot at it. Genetics is one thing, but lifestyle I can control. I am happy I found this book. I recommend it to anyone who wants to ride out their senior years with the best chances to good health and happiness.

I don't like this book as it is nothing more than a use it or lose it plug. As for all the dietary information, what a confusing mess. I couldn't finish the book, the final straw being countries with higher per capita chocolate consumption produce more Nobel laureates. Good grief, increased ice cream consumption correlates with more swimming deaths (think summer) so lets not conjure up images of bloated swimmers treading water, or chocolate munching egg heads. That was it for me.

Highly recommend this book- very informative! Helpful toward understanding function of brain and importance of nutrition as it relates to brain function. Great for caregivers and for those of us who may be at potential risks of untoward changes in brain due to aging or other unforeseen causes!

I have rated Boost Your Brain 5 stars as I want as many people to consume the information as possible. It is well documented and provides proof of the connection between living a healthy lifestyle and a health brain particularly as we age.

Truly well written and I enjoyed it all. The author did a great job of explaining and presenting his research. Definitely worth the $. Yes, back to exercise and diet but really he says a whole lot more.

Loved this book, and I first bought it for Kindle, then got a hardback to have as reference and be able to underline it. A very qualified author gives tons of great infraction on good eating, good exercise, meditation, and lots of information that explains the workings of the brain. It's technical, but not too much. I have loaned it out to two people and they liked it a lot. I think it is helpful to those of us aging and worrying about losing some of our mental sharpness or a younger person who really wants to work on keeping their brain sharp. I really like the information on hows and whys of several things you have to do to keep your hippocampus from shrinking after age 50. We can actually help it grow a little bit, which helps stave off some dementia. Very usable information, well written, fascinating.

I haven't finished the book yet but I do like it very much. Gives hope and practical exercises for brain function improvement for all ages and how to prevent brain deterioration while traditional medicine has nothing to offer. A very important book in the age of exploding Alzheimer's and other dementias

My mom is reading this book and absolutely loves it. She is worried that her brain is not working as well as it could, and shares some interesting findings. By the way, my mom is 93 years old.

In Silicon Valley, "ability to code" is now the uber-metric to track. Starting from how engineers are interviewed, actual hands-on work (due to processes that overemphasizes "do" over "think, e.g., daily stand-ups require you to say what concrete thing you did yesterday), evaluation of work ("move fast and break things") to over-emphasizing on downstream "fixes" (prod-ops culture, 24*7 firefighting heroism) - the top echelon of technology gravitated towards things that it can see, feel, measure. What often gets neglected in this "code be all" culture is deep understanding of fundamental concepts, and how most newer "innovations" are indeed built on a handful time-honored principles.Nowhere else perhaps is this more prominent than in data space that up-levels libraries and frameworks as the conversation starter. That gets in the way of success. It is indeed impossible to model Cassandra "tables" without understanding - at least - quorum, compaction, log-merge data structure. Due to the way the present day solutions are built ("fits one use case perfectly well"), if these solutions are not implemented well to the particular domain, failure is just a release away.Mr Kleppmann does a great job of articulating the "systems" aspects of data engineering. He starts from a functional 4 lines code to build a database to the way how one can interpret and implement concurrency, serializability, isolation and linearizability (the latter for distributed systems). His book also has over 800 pointers to state of the art research as well as some of the computer science's classic papers. The book slows down its pace on the chapter on Distributed System and on the final one. A good editor could have trimmed about 120 pages and still retain most value one could get from the book.That said, if you ever worked on data systems, especially across paradigms (IMS -> RDBMS -> NoSQL -> Map-Reduce -> Spark -> Streaming -> Polyglot), this book is pretty much only resource out there to tie the "loose ends" and paint a coherent narrative. Highly recommended!

I'm only 3 chapters into this book and I think it deserves a 5 star already.If you are interested in distributed systems or scalability, this book is a must-read for you. It gives you a high level understanding of different technology, including the idea behind it, the pros and cons, and the problem it is trying to solve. A great book for practitioners who want to learn all the essential concepts quickly.I didn't come from a traditional CS background, but I did have some basic knowledge in hardware and data structure. You will need some of that, such as hard disk vs SSD and AVL tree, to understand the materials. If you are completely new to backend or DS, you may want to start with another book "Web Scalability for Startup Engineers." After that book, you can read the free article "Distributed Systems for Fun and Profit" and you are good to go for this amazing book :D

The book deals with all the stuff that happens around data engineering : storage, models, structures, access patterns, encoding, replication, partitioning, distributed systems, batch & stream processing and the future of data systems (don't expect ML because it is a different beast).Kleppman has coherently blended the relevant computer science theory with modern use cases and applications. The focus is primarily on the core principles and thought-processes that one must apply when it comes to building data services. Design concepts don't go out-of-date soon, so the book has very long shelf-life.The high-point of this book is the author's lucid prose, which indicates mastery of the subject matter and clarity of thought. Conceptualizing reality is an art and the author really shines here. You’ll find that whenever you have a question after reading a particular sentence, the answer to that will be found in the upcoming sentences. It’s like mind-reading.Also kudos to the author for those nice diagrams and interesting maps (and for avoiding mathematical formulas with Greek symbols). The bibliography at the end of each chapter is thorough enough for unending personal research.If you are working on or interviewing for big data engineering, systems design, cloud consulting or devops/SRE, then this book is a keeper for a long-long time.
